Description
Presumably from casurus, participle of the verb “to fall” in the meaning of “to sag”. It is to reject any analogy with place names like Cesi or Cese.
Caso is part of the municipality of S. Anatolia di Narco. At 667 meters a.s.l., it had 70 inhabitants in 1971. It is seat of “comunanza agraria” (rural district). The village lies at the confluence of mountain paths connecting Scheggino and S.Anatolia di Narco to Monteleone di Spoleto.
It consists of two parts: one, more compact, partially preserving the walls and one of the gate, is rich in typical architectural elements (portals, arched subways and so on). Today the village has been completely restored and it is a nice example of an ancient pastoral town of the Appennino Umbro. In the center of the village is a building, owned by the episcopal Mensa of Spoleto – clearly a former church - where is an attractive room with vaults supported by pillars decorated with Saints, frescoed in the second half of th fifteenth century, according the style of Nicola da Siena.
The other part of the village, grown out of the walls around the church of Saint Maria, repliche rolex consists of buildings mainly used for agricultural purposes.
