Description
The Church of Santa Maria, built in the late thirteenth century, was originally dedicated to San Francesco, together with the annexed monastery. The church was bordered by the same town walls of Vallo di Nera and people could reach the access from outside through the way still today going up sloping towards its facade.
It follow the template of the Franciscan church with a nave, covered with trusses and ending with a deep tribune. The facade recalls the Spoletan Romanesque; built with stone ashlars, it ends in the middle with a spire and it is enriched by the ornaments of the ogival portal and of the rose.
A massive bell tower rises above the presbytery, included in the wall of the castle. In the large bell chamber is the main bell from the fourteenth century. On the left wall leans out a niche housing a clock weights.
