Description
The parish Church of San Giovanni Battista, in the town of Vallo di Nera, was built at the top of the castle between the 13th and 14th century and partially rebuilt in the 16th century. The date of 1575, carved into the corner of the façade, refers to the portal and the rose window. The false front presents a belfry (greater bell from 1745); on the right side, two single-mullioned windows belong to the primitive construction.
Inside, canvases of the 17th century with one altar in stucco and one altar in wood. The apse wall is entirely frescoed by Jacopo Siculo and is dated 1536. The conch holds the Death and Coronation of the Virgin, inspired by the works of Filippo Lippi in the apse of the Cathedral of Spoleto. In the transverse arch, the Baptism of Christ, Evangelists and Doctors of the Church; on the front of the arch, Annunciation and Eternal Father; bottom left, the Saints Sebastian and Rocco and, on the right, Angels curtain-holders (with the Spoleto coat of arms) at the sides of a tabernacle in stone from 1504.
On the right side of the nave, a painted niche uncovered in 1975 shows a Crucifixion dating to the mid 16th century. The 16th century baptismal font is in local stone.
