Description

Just outside the town of Ceselli it is possible to catch sight of a small elegant Romanesque building distinguished by the semi-circular apse, a small double-mullioned window in the façade and the belfry.

The interior of the Church of San Vito was reconstructed and reduced to two chambers in the 16th century. The interior preserves an interesting Crucifixion of 1603, with a vivid and moving representation of the purgative souls, placed inside a large pot of water boiling over the fire. In the side walls Martyr Saints inside the arches, frescoes of the mid 16th century, by a painter who re-echoes the style of Vincenzo Tamagni.

St. Vito is one of those saints who was called ‘anargyroi’ in the east and ‘auxiliatores’ in the west. These were saints who, having practised the medical profession in life for free and worked miraculous healings, were considered the most capable of interceding to heal the sick. In particular, St. Vito was invoked for rabies. Many interesting rituals are connected to the worship of the saint: to this day, the elderly of the town remember that dogs affected by rabies were closed inside a niche beside the altar.
