Description
The church of St. Michele Arcangelo is located in the castle of Gavelli, in the municipality of Sant`Anatolia Narco. The current church is a fifteenth century reconstruction of an older building; the stone portal dates back to the 1587.
The interior has a single nave, covered with trusses and outgoing in a wide semi-circular apse. The five fourteenth century niches on side walls and the apse partially preserve the fresco decoration from the fifteenth and sixteenth century. On the left, in the first niche is Our Lady in Glory and Saint Francis, Saint Jerome and Saint Anthony from Padova by Giovanni di Pietro, known as the Spanish (1523).
The ancient wealth of the church is testified by the extremely rich fresco decoration, by the remaining paintings decorating the altars (Saint Michel the Archangel still in late-mannerist style; Our Lady of the Rosary from the end of seventeenth century, within a carved and gilded frame; Saint Anthony from the eighteenth century), by the carved and gilded tabernacle on the main altar (fifteenth century), by the stone carved baptismal font (fifteenth century) and by a wooden Saint Sebastian (life-size and with traces of polychrome, from the sixteenth century).
