Description
The Church of San Martino is situated in the main square of the town of Abeto and is the only one currently used for worship. At the start of the staircase that rises to the parish church is a Roman landmark, which bears witness to the Roman phase of the town.
Founded in the 10th century, it has undergone many reconstructions over the centuries, the last after the 1703 earthquake, to assume its current neoclassical appearance. This is particularly visible in the imposing staircase which culminates in a portico.
The interior preserves a polychrome statue of St. John the Baptist, from the 16th century; a Beheading of the Baptist, a 17th century canvas; the important arched panel with the Madonna of the Snow by Neri di Bicci, Florentine from the 15th century; the canvas of the Madonna of the Rosary by Matteo Rosselli and a Crucifixion (deriving from the painting by Roncalli at S. Eutizio) and wood candelabra-holding angels (15th century).
The sacristy houses an important collection of archaeological finds, prized metal liturgical furnishings and sacred vestments (ordered by the parish priest Don Ansano Fabbi).
