Description

The Church of Saint Mary Appearing, in the hamlet of Capanne di Collegiacone, dates back to the second half of the XV century; maybe the church arose in a place where was another church in ancient time, dedicated to Saint Angel according to the popular tradition, to Saint John the Baptist according to A. Fabbi.

During the Early Middle Ages, it was a cell depending from the Abbey of Farfa, then in 1231 passed to that of Ferentillo; but in 1303, being Ferentillo Abbey demolished, all its properties, including churches, were inherited by the Capitolo Lateranense. This is an unusual votive building with a single barrel-vaulted nave, linked with an hermitage through a roof (the hermitage became the current sacristy).

On the facade above the portal, are a lunette with Christ enclosed in a mandorla, Saints, The Invention of the Cross and Eve, fresco from the early XVI century, while on the atrium facade is a big composition depicting Heaven from the first half of the XVI century, whose authors are the Sparapane painters.

The interior is one of the few examples of fully painted country church; the frescoes of the vault, belonging to the first phase of decoration, are attributed to Antonio di Piertommaso Sparapane and to his son Paolo (1478). The vault is divided into four frameworks, everyone depicting two Evangelists e two Doctors of the Church. Between frameworks is a band of fake mosaic.

On the left wall stands a series of votive images of Saints arranged in the spaces amongst the columns of a fake porch, under a penthouse in fake mosaic (Anthony the Abbot, James, Peter, Paul, John so called Decollato, Augustine, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist) by Antonio Sparapane and sons (XV century).

On the right wall, votive frameworks with some Ladies (seven overall, in frameworks without architectural divisions); from the third one, they date back to the XVI century, in overlapping sections (the upper one is by the Sparapane artists, the lower by artists of Peruginesque school). On the main altar is a statue of Our Lady in earthenware from the end of XV century (1570), in the manner of Angelucci; maybe it had inside another small statue of the Madonna Apparente. The doors (moved elsewhere for safety reasons), being closed, show the Annunciation in the center (on the top Visitation and Presentation to the Temple, in the lower panels, Christmas and Epiphany), while when open they display, in the center, the Saints Peter and John the Baptist (in the upper panels are Presentation to the Temple and Circumcision of Christ, in the lower ones Flight into Egypt and Coronation of Mary). Leaning against the outside is a Roman funerary altar, found near the close town of Roccaporena, mentioning the local judiciary of the Ottoviri.
