Description

The top of Monte Sibilla, at 2173 meters a.s.l., is not the highest peak of Sibillini, but legends, surrounding this mountain for centuries, allowed her to give its name to the whole area.

According to these legends, the cave on top of the mountain housed a queen of the underworld, the Sibyl, deriving its initial fame from the fourteenth century work of literature “Il Guerin Meschino” by Andrea da Barberino. The mysterious cave was closed by a devastating landslide, just some descriptions and drawings of ancient visitors are remaining of it.

The peculiar shape of the mountain show a not outstanding peak, surrounded by a natural enclosure consisting of other mountains and by a series of peaks appearing like a steep path. Panoramic viewpoints are many in this mountain, especially the side facing the Gorge Infernaccio offers several trails without special difficulties.

Hub of the activities relating to the mountain is the Rifugio Sibilla, at 1540 m, well organized with 35 beds and a restaurant.
