Description

The road of Valcasana is an itinerary of extraordinary environmental interest, which penetrates the heart of the Coscerno Massif, reaching as far as the eagle’s nest castles of Caso and Gavelli.

The vegetation is formed by a compact bush of hornbeam, flowering ash, downy oak, mountain maple and beech, with considerable high-trunk frequency in numerous inaccessible or very steep locations.

Climbing back up towards Melette Plain, the wood becomes even more hygrophyl with willow, poplar and alder. Between the narrow passage and the Melette Plain grows a small wood of century-old downy oak, mixed with poplar and willow.

The last kilometre of Val Casana as far as Scheggino, features Mediterranean-mountain vegetation with Holm oak, Aleppo pine, downy oak and buxus; the Aleppo pine prevails on the right slope.
