Description
The first settlement was perhaps a monastery built in the 6th century by Mauro di Siria and was dedicated to his son Felice.
On an isolated hill between the surrounding, looming mountains stands the town of Castel San Felice, which controlled a bridge over the river Nera and the valley to the north. The latter path is still passable and you are advised to walk it starting from S. Anatolia.
The history of the settlement can be divided into three stages: the first was hermitic as the caves near the river prove; the second stage is linked to the church of San Felice di Narco; the final stage was the castle as the place name itself suggests from the nearby church.
The town plan is typical of castles perched on the summit of a hill with concentric circular roads intersected by very steep paths (mainly made of steps) radiating outwards. The buildings are partly ruined and abandoned and partly spoilt by recent restructuring. The religious buildings inside the castle named after San Paolo and San Sebastiano were fairly small due to the presence of the conspicuous complex of San Felice and have been gradually abandoned and, in the case of San Paolo, used for other purposes.
According to tradition the small hollow on the left-hand side of the bridge was inhabited by a dragon and some illegal raids discovered finds from the Villanovian period.
