Description
The use of the word “piè” from the late Latin “pes”, foot, in a geographical meaning, dates back to the fourteenth century and indicates the bottom, in this case, the lower part of the valley.
Piedivalle is the oldest and the largest of the villages arose around the Abbey of Saint Eutizio, all of them having a clear character of “villa” (amongst historical Italian settlements the “villa” is an open town without walls, often with a plain development), except for Acquaro, which reminds the triangular plan of a castle developing along the slopes of a hill.
Located at the confluence between the road connecting Preci to Norcia and a trail going to Visso, Piedivalle was a commercial hub in the whole system of villages around the Abbey.
