Description
The place name comes from the Latin “vicia”, an old form of “vescia”, indicating “veccia” preceded by a fairly common, naturalistic compound found in place names meaning “sack”.
Saccovescio was a relay village along the road between Preci and Visso, certain stretches of which still follow the ancient route. The settlement consists of two parts: the first, lower down, has some lordly buildings and the parish church of the Sacro Cuore; the second part higher up appears more like a rural village.
An exceptionally well made, Roman, funeral stone is preserved in the headquarters of the agricultural community in the church square. This is a small funeral altar made of white marble decorated with a Dionysian pattern (a satyr playing a double flute between two dancing maenads); the back is smooth and straight as it probably rested against the wall. The altar dates back to around the 1st century B.C.
