Description
“Muccia” may come from the Romanesque-Umbrian verb “mucciare” from the Gaulish-Latin form “muciare” which means to hide, to flee.
Mucciafora is a hamlet in the municipality of Poggiodomo at 1,070 m. a.s.l.; with 135 inhabitants in 1971 and is the headquarters of the agricultural community. It stands on the crest of a hill guarding the surrounding valleys.
The town layout has a herringbone shaped road that climbs steeply in steps and with curved, transversal roads. This layout can still be seen despite recent interventions of expansion on the hill above and the construction of a disproportionately wide road of doubtful use that surrounds the old town to the north. Similar buildings can be found in the area around the church of San Bartolomeo.
