Description

Between the River Nera valley, the Tissino Pit and the plain of Monteleone di Spoleto rises the limestone massif formed by Mount Coscerno (1,684m), Mount Civitella (1,565m) and Mount Aspra (1,652 m) the true “heart” of the Umbrian Apennines.

Here, the element of surprise and amazement never disappoint, not even today, in light of what was “discovered” in spring-summer 2007, when a couple of imperial Crows, the first in Umbria after more than thirty years, was seen reproducing itself in a wild ravine, and when a brown bear let himself be observed by an incredulous young couple in love.

Magnificent formations of Holm oak grow on the warm rocky slopes. A few specimens of this Mediterranean oak can reach up to 1,400 metres in height and they are flanked by the more “mountainous” maple and beech, which turn the mountains of the area red, reddish purple and yellow in autumn. The fauna of Coscerno is among the richest in the entire region. Silence and the landscape are the two elements that make the natural areas of Valnerina unique.

Organising an excursion in the company of guides and excursion associations will enable you to appreciate the purity of these locations at their best.
