Poggiodomo is one of Italy`s smallest communes and the highest in the Valnerina, The historic centre consists of a castle founded in the 13th century, which is typical of settlements build on rocky spurs. The ancient town as been considerably reduced as the spur has gradually crumbled away, while the town of San Pietro has developed from the 17th century onwards. San Pietro features mainly aristocratic buildings, which ever in those times, were used as summer residence given the area’s healthy climate. Of particular interest in this commune, is the hamlet of Usigniwhere Cardinal Fausto Poli has born. Cardinal Poli was one of the emerging Italian characters of the first half of the 17th century, becoming the special secretary to the Pope Urbano VIII, the presence of Cardinal Poli was crucial for this area: indeed, it was he who spread devotion to Saint Rita and showered the valley’s churches with objects and painting of remarkable historical and artistic value.
