Description
Vallo di Nera is a free castle-town founded near a pre-existing feudal settlement called Flezano, as a result of a concession issued by the city of Spoleto in 1271. Situated on a hilltop, the town overlook the expanse of the Nera Valley. Its name can be traced back either to the valley itself (the valley’s ancients name was Castrum Valli), to the Roman defensive vallum or to the Longbard name of the forest: vald. The current coat of arms features three united castles representing the nineteenth-century union with the castle-town of Meggiano and Paterno.
The urban lay-out is fairly tight-knit, featuring an original, circular centre on a hillock, with an area ring-road and steep ascends leading to the Piazza San Giovanni, where is the church of the same name, the heart of the town. Next to the town we find the 15th century hamlet of Santa Maria and the 16th -17th century hamlet of Casali.
