Description
Scheggino is a triangular-shaped, hillside castle-town with a keep and watch-tower at the top. Scheggino was built on the left bank of the River Nera to guard the ancient road and one of the few crossing points across the river. Its name probably derives from the structure of the terrain, featuring shards ("scheggia") of rocks, where the town was built. Its original centre dates from the 13th century, when inhabitants who had taken refuge here following the destruction of the feudal castle of Pozzano, began clustering houses around the pre-existing tower.
Today, the town features: the oldest and highest part called "Head of the Land", surrounded by the first walls; evidence of expansion further downstream, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries; the 16th century hamlet along the canal, with the addition of the water-mill on the other side of the river; and evidence of expansion from later centuries. Medieval remains include the walls, watch-towers, doors and numerous bastions of the castle.
